Ramsay's laudatory biograph emphasized the political and military side of Washington in contrast to other biographers such as Mason Locke Weems. 371pp.<br><br>CONDITION: Covers are heavily rubbed, and front cover is a little warped. Leather is intact, except for chips missing off the tail of the spine. Front flyleaf and frontispiece are missing the lower half of the page and appear to be bonded together. Binding and text block are sound. Foxing throughout, but text is clear. Full refund if not satisfied.

Lacking the frontispiece portrait, binding heavily worn with the upper shoulder split (but sound) and some loss at the spine, modest foxing throughout and the second half of the text with some foredge staining affecting a little bit of the text (but not legibility), sound but good only.

Vernon, etc. The first two editions of this had a frontispiece portrait of Washington, but this has been replaced by an allegorical frontispiece depicting Washington has a huge rock that stands firm against the elements (there must have been some copyright dispute about the use of Washington's image, is our guess). Not a bad copy.

The spine and boards are heavily rubbed, though the spine label is still dimly legible. Deeper, indented rubbing on the back cover, running along the outer edge. Endpapers and main pages foxed, but otherwise unmarked. Binding is secure. A classic early biography of George Washington, with a portrait frontispiece. The author, David Ramsay (1749-1815) was an early American historian of the Revolutionay War. He was also a Congressman and physician, and was eventually killed by a deranged patient of his; as a result, he is regarded as the first U.S. politician to be assassinated.
