The author, Gladys Amanda Reichard was a cultural anthropologist and student of Franz Boas at Columbia. Reichard spent years on the Miguelto / Red Point Navajo reservation living with with the people, learning the language, weaving and about Navajo religion.

Minor wear to extremities; slight darkening to spine; faint circular mark to front board else near fine. Slipcase is somewhat worn. The striking plates are printed on imported handmade Japanese paper and depict detailed reproductions of the sandpaintings by Miguelito. These sandpaintings accompany his chants, including Bead Chant and Shooting Chant, two of the most important Navajo rites. Also includes a thorough description and explanation of these rites and the legends associated with them.
