The Aloe plant originated from the Arabian Peninsula, & grows in the tropical climate of South Africa. Although it is cultivated for agricultural & medicinal uses, it also occurs naturally in Africa.

Tracing the history of the discovery of aloes against a background of the early exploration of the Cape and areas further afield. Includes 77 coloured illustrations. An area of the half-title page with part of inscription has been cut out. Discolouration marks from old cellotape used to affix the cut-outpiece. Clear cellotape used at the gutter to reinforce long split. Thumbing. 1st Edition. Condition: Fair to good-. Dust jacket: Fair to good. Some cockling. Folds, header and footer reinforced with clear cellotape on the verso. Binding: Hardcover. Sunning and toning to spine. Discolouration marks to boards. Edge-wear to extremities. Bumping to corners.

INCLUDES a type-written sheet of the flowering times of different species. Expect extra postage.

Full leather. The leathered boards are a little scuffed and worn by shelving. Gilt decoration and titling (kindly). The boards are also a little dulled but they retain their vigour and vibrancy. The page edges have some shelving marks. There a blotches of foxing fore and aft. The contents are overwhelming most agreeably healthy and smart. They are fresh faced, neat, very clean and clear, the illustrations are vivid and bright, the pages are tight, certain, generous, diligent, gratifying.
