Includes a foreword by the renowned spy novelist Len Deighton, as Bond novelist Raymond Benson has suppressed his essay printed in the original edition; the replacement 'no holds barred' Deighton intro, titled 'Quantum of Tolerance' sets forth the publisher's case for persisting with publication of the book.

This first edition contains reprinted court documents from the Thunderball trial which the Trust contended was an infringement of their copyright and not a matter of public record. The publishers took the view that these were public documents but did not have the financial wherewithal to challenge the request for the remaining unsold copies to be pulped. In late February 2008, the book was withdrawn, and the accompanying revised edition was issued shortly after, with the controversial content removed.
