Rebound in a full leather binding with red title label and gilt map design (see photos) New endpapers. Edges have been slightly trimmed to appear fresh. No names or bookplates. Light smudging on the title page; other text is unremarkable.

Very clean and tight internally, blank endpapers renewed, no pen-marks. Not from a library so no such stamps or labels. For-edges speckled red. Size: 8vo (210mm x 140mm); collation: pp. iv, [2], 452. Tidy book in very presentable condition.

Page edges untrimmed. 16pp. publisher's advertisements bound in at the front. A very good copy, the binding square and secure with cracking and a little loss to the spine, minor cracking to the joints and some bumping and wear to the corners. The contents with a contemporary owner's ink name to the front pastedown and some occasional scattered foxing (more so to the preliminary pages) are otherwise in very good order. An account of the pioneering experiences of an overland route through Egypt and Italy traversed by the British army officer, traveller and writer Joseph Moyle Sherer (1789-1869). Handsomely bound in contemporary straight-grained burgundy morocco, sides rule with prominent gilt foliate borders, spines with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, title and date gilt-lettered directly to spine, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt. Old bookseller's label belonging to Ingalton of Eton to flyleaf of Volume I. Old presentation inscription to John Walpole, younger son of Horatio Walpole, 2nd Earl of Orford, who served with the Guards during the Peninsular Was, and was wounded at the Siege of Burgos. Some light rubbing to extremities, contents clean and crisp, generally an excellent copy. Joseph Moyle Sherer (1789�1869) was an army officer and writer. Contains a double fore-edge painting (one a view of the Castle on the Rhine and the other of Oxfordshire with fishing scene). The book is inscribed in a contemporary hand to "J. L. Sealy from his affectionate friend T. W. Tindal."
