Volume one has been hollowed out to make a book-safe. Two volumes. Latin language. The pages of volume one have been excised to make a book-safe, or hollowed-out book in an attempt to conceal objects within. Books have often been used as a concealment device because they are readily available and inconspicuous in most settings, the safe can be clear to recognise for the owner but don't stand out to a thief. Many examples are found in television and film. Volume two contains some of the Sophocles' seven tragic plays, with sections in the original ancient Greek and notes in Latin. Vol. I, xxx, [ii], 286; Vol. II, 344pp. All edges gilt. All extremities sl. rubbed with sl. rubbing to spines. Pages browned o/w a clean and attractive set. VG+.

Oxonii [Oxford]: Typis N. Bliss; impensis R. Bliss, et R. Bliss, jun., 1808. 2 vols., 8vo, pp. xx, 555, [1]; [iv], 186, 197, [1], 190, [2, ads]. Contemporary black straight-grain morocco, boards bordered with a gilt rule, spines divided by raised bands between gilt rules, lettered in gilt direct turn-ins with a gilt swag roll, edges gilt. Paper a little toned, occasional spotting. Bindings rubbed at joints and edges, some small spots of surface wear, spines dulled. Armorial bookplate printed in brown of Henry Harden to front pastedowns. An unusually elaborate production (and binding) for a text published by Bliss, whose usual output was small-format texts for school and university use. It reprints of Brunck's valuable edition of Sophocles, which had been published by the editor in several formats beginning in 1786, though these had been largely expensive and limited productions. Minor marginal worming to first few leaves, not affecting letters of text; a couple of leaves with light waterstaining; some early headlines cropped or cut close. Greek text only, lacks Camerarius’ scholia, published in the second part. Uncommon fourth printing of Sophocles in Greek, one of the principal editions between the Aldine of 1502 and Turnebus’ edition of 1553. Later sixteenth-century vellum, with later red morocco label, lacks ties. Near contemporary signature of Johann Behem on the title; signature on lower pastedown: Fesendorff, 1577; Nineteenth century inscription on title, possibly ‘Bibliothek Grissrring’; ink stamp of Repton School on title, and armorial bookplate of Laurence Arthur Burd (1863-1931), philatelist, expert on Machiavelli and teacher at Repton (where the Burd Library is named for him). Basilae: Per Ioanem Oporinum [ 1558 ], 1558. Hardcover. See Description. 8vo. pp. 499, [13]. Bound in later full red morocco with gilt border fillets on front and rear covers. All edges of the book block are gilt. The binding contains areas of rubbing and wear; minor careful restoration is present to the head cap of the spine and to the corner tips of the boards. The upper corner tip of the front blank fly leaf is restored. Interior pages show some light age-toning and scattered mild foxing but are generally clean. This is a Latin translation from the Greek of the seven tragedies of Sophocles - Ajax Flagellifer, Electra, Oedipus Tyrannus, Antigone, Oedipus Coloneus, Trachiniae, Philoctetes. The translation and notes are by Thomas Kirchmeyer (Naogeorgus) 1508-1563, was an influential dramatist, humanist and Lutheran theologian. [2], 1-324, [1] pp. Full eighteenth-century calf with the spine in six compartments, gold lettering and decorations on the spine, gilt tooling to the boards' edges; textblock decoratively spotted. Translated into Latin from the Greek by Johannes Lalamantius. Adams 1452. Oxford Classical Dictionary 1422-1425. Sophocles was one of the three principal Greek tragedians of Classical Athens. He wrote more than 120 plays and won a minimum of 20 competitions, with 18 victories at the City Dionysia. Just seven of his plays survive, two of which earned him victories in dramatic competitions (Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus).
