In 1913 Stefansson organized the Canadian Arctic Expedition, arranged by the Canadian government to explore the sea west of the Parry Archipelago, the northernmost islands in the Canadian Arctic. The expedition set off from Nome, Alaska, but soon ran into trouble. The lead ship Karluk became trapped in ice and Stefansson disembarked to continue his travels, purportedly to gather provisions, but, in the eyes of the crew, in order to avoid drifting off course.The Karluk drifted westward in the ice floes, eventually being crushed in January 1914. Very good in dark blue cloth with gilt titles on the spine and front cover.  Corners and spine ends show minor bumping and scuffing.  NOT ex-library.  Binding is very sound.  No fading to spine of covers.  Gilt still bright.  The book shows little if any use.  Two maps in excellent condition in pocket on rear pastedown.  The pocket has a small tear.  Ink name of the original owner (dated "Xmas 1922") on the ffep and an ink stamp of another previous owner at the top of the front pastedown.  No other marks or damage at all. Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879 - 1962) was an Arctic explorer and ethnologist.
