Photo-illustrated softcover published on the occasion of retrospective exhibition to mark Steichen's 82nd birthday. Inscribed by Steichen to Marty Forscher, who ran a renowned NYC camera repair shop and was repairman to a Navy photographic unit run by Steichen during World War II. Photocopy of Forscher's 2009 NY Times obituary laid in. Steichen had a long career in photography, as an art photographer, photojournalist, and curator. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Extraordinary portraits of Gloria Swanson, Fred Astaire, Charlie Chaplin, Isadora Duncan, the iconic portrait of Greta Garbo, to name a few, plus still lives, nature shots, and a variety of other scenarios, incl. advertising. Lacking slipcase. Binding with some wear along edges, some fraying at bottom corner at foredge, lesser at top and tail of spine. Horizontal tear through leaf with pages 23 and 24, no loss of text. Block with some age-toning, not affecting images. Binding in overall good, images in near fine condition.

Mencken, Gloria Swanson, Isadora Duncan, Lillian Gish, Fred Astaire, Greta Garbo, Gertrude Lawrence, Ruth Draper, Paul Robson. One of the great photographic monographs. A stunning production which shows the wide range of his talents and includes portraiture, abstractions and pastoral scenes. A clean and tight near fine copy in cloth boards and with some very faint scattered foxing to the page edges in an about very good example of the scarce tissue jacket that is also foxed and with a number of chips and tears. Lacking the very scarce slipcase. Signed by both Steichen and Sandburg on the limitation page. A very nice copy of this classic. (Roth 54-57) This is a heavy and oversized book and will require extra shipping.
