Wear/creasing to bottom corner of spine label. Binding is firm. Light soiling/age toning to endpapers; otherwise interior is age toned, with limited mild soiling/spotting in margins. .

Very Good: binding tight and square, just a touch of rubbing at the corners, the spine label is toned but not chipped, one very small spot of fraying of the buckram, front hinge starting, the black prelim is present but separated. Stated First Edition; A Fine book in the very rare acetate jacket. SIGNED, dated, and inscribed by the author to the front free paper. A beautiful copy of this collection of lectures Ms. Stein was planning for US universities upon her return from Paris; the lectures give critiques of many of her celebrity friends including Picasso, Cezanne, Sherwood Anderson, and of course Ernest Hemingway. Scarce in the first edition with the jacket and in this condition, rare indeed signed by Stein. This copy is in Fine condition with a square, tight binding, bright spine lettering and a sharp, crisp photo of Stein to the front board, and clean, white pages throughout; the book does show a slight over opening to the first few pages and moderate foxing to the rear free paper and paste down. Housed in a clean and bright good to very good acetate jacket that is split at the spine and the front flap but is still intact and otherwise sharp. Dudley Fitts' copy, with a lengthy inscription to him from Stein (see below), and with his handwritten ownership name and date, 1934, all on the recto of the front free endpaper. 8vo., orange and purple woven cloth spine with paper label over cloth covered boards, the front board bearing Carl Van Vechten's 1934 photo of Stein at Bilignin, 264pp. This the first state binding; we have seen the Second Printing in full cloth in lieu of the woven spine and the pictorial boards. Some darkening and spotting to the boards, light foxing to the rear endpapers, two small chips to the paper label. We acknowledge with gratitude the assistance of Susan Holbrook, of the University of Windsor, who provided the following reading of the inscription from Stein's difficult to decipher script: "For Dudley Fitts, Yes there was not a play but if there had been no there would have been a play if there had not been Always… Leer más
