Stevenson joined the 1810 revolution and was named Governor of Esmeraldas. Later he became secretary to Lord Cochrane, vice-admiral of Chile. "His book is of great value for the period immediately preceding the South American Revolution. He used his unique opportunities for observation to advantage." DNB XVIII, p. 1144.<br/><br/>
