This remarkable Englishman who lived in Essex, London and Hertfordshire, from 1749 to 1802, was artistic, scholarly and industrious. This book pioneered the study of popular recreations and amusements as a whole. Strutt mined his information the hard way from the books, manuscripts and illustrations housed in his beloved British Museum in London. Sports and Pastimes was an immediate publishing success. This edition benefits greatly from an index, compiled by William Hone, and 140 illustrations 'selected from ancient paintings'.
