Nashvill, 1866. Three volumes. Contemporary sheep and boards. Sheep scuffed and worn, spines just about perished, boards detached or nearly so. Internally fine, with only an occasional trace of foxing. About good. Includes material relating to the military governorship of Andrew Johnson which ended in 1865, the abolition of slavery, the reinstatement of Tennessee to its position in the Union in 1866, and the Reconstruction period and policies. A rare collection of the laws passed by the Tennessee General Assembly during October 1841. Covers the requisite legal and governmental concerns of a frontier American state, notably building infrastructure, regulating the militia, land & estate matters, voting laws, establishing courts, taxation, and more. This session also incorporates several towns, namely Lynchburg, empowered the governor to commute the death sentence, and amended existing laws in relation to "free persons of color." A rare collection of the laws passed by the Tennessee General Assembly during October 1839. Laws address the typical legal and governmental concerns of a frontier American state, namely infrastructure, military & militia service, land & estate matters, voting laws, establishing courts and banks, taxation, and more. This session also incorporates the town of Chattanooga, among others, and amends an earlier act incorporating Memphis. Particularly notable is the act "to prohibit the practice of permitting slaves to act as if they were free persons of color." These acts and resolutions were passed in September 1833, and address the typical legal and governmental concerns of a developing frontier American state. Topics include infrastructure, military & militia service, land & estate matters, voting laws, establishing courts and banks, jurisdiction, and much more. Particularly notable is the act "to prevent the owners of steam boats and stages from carrying off slaves, without the knowledge or consent of the owners." Lightly dampstained. About good. Acts passed at this session include a number of laws which relate to the Panic of 1837, including several which directly concern banking. Acts such as an act abolishing imprisonment for debt; an act for the relief of debtors to the Bank of Tennessee; an act to relieve the people of the state by amending an act of 1820 entitled "an act to prevent a sacrifice of real estate and for other purposes"; and an act authorizing banks to issue money.
