Begun in 1859, Tennyson's classic exploration of the legend of King Arthur 'The Idylls of the King' originally consisted of four poems titled 'Enid', Vivien', 'Elaine' and 'Guinevere', building to a total of 12 poems by 1885. This work contains the first publication of two of Tennyson's Idylls; "Gareth and Lynette" and "The Last Tournament." Tennyson based "Gareth and Lynette" on the fourth book of Malory's 'Le Morte d'Arthur'. "The Last Tournament" tells the story of Tristram and Isolt, and of King Arthur's purge of the Red Knight..
