Volume I, No. 2. Spring, 1938, edition of Verve features articles by Georges Braque, Andre Malraux, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Georges Bataille. Color and gilt heliogravure, paintings, illuminations, lithographs in color, drawings and photographs. Cover is by Braque. There is no slipcase. Tissue divides most artwork, I found one missing tissue on the Renoir. The book itself is in fair condition. Some page toning on edges and the cover has a 1/2" cover loss at the crown of the spine and cover loss toward the bottom of the spine (see pictures). Cover also shows some soiling. All lithos included. 126 pp.

A nice clean copy with no previous owners' names or other defacements.

Paris: Verve, Rue Ferou, 1939. First Edition. This issue includes lithograph images of 'The Dance' by Henri Matisse and 'The Garden of Allah' by Andre Derain. This copy is in a remarkable hardcover leather binding with inlaid green and yellow leather spelling 'Verve' on the front board. The back board features the same design in relief with the lettering and pattern laid under the outer black leather cover. The original colour lithograph wrappers have been retained and now form the paste-down endpapers of the book. The previous owner and binder, one Richard Griffin of Sydney New South Wales, has written an honest and endearing explanation of his project on the rear blank free endpaper: 'This is the first leather binding I ever attempted. Having to give up the grog left me with long lucid evenings to be filled instead." A unique and remarkable binding production. Large quarto, lithograph and heliotype plates throughout, black leather binding with fitted slipcase, this copy is in very good condition.

Fully illustrated throughout with drawings, paintings and photographs, these 2 numbers contain original full lithographs by Chagall, Miro, Rattner, Klee, Matisse & Derain. The two issues have been bound into one hardbound volume and the binding has been beautifully hand painted, in acrylic and oils, with an abstract design, including the volume title, to both the boards and the spine by noted Neo-Expressionist American painter Gaylen Hansen. Some rubbing to the edges and one split in the front board (without loss) but generally in very good condition.Included with the volume is a fine hardback copy of the fully illustrated book issued in 2007 to accompany the retrospective exhibition "Gaylen Hansen: Three decades of Paintings" at the Seattle Art Museum (October 2007 - January 2008) and Salt Lake City Art Center (February - April 2008). :.
