Uniform later (probably mid-nineteenth century) full morocco for the bookseller George Rutland, raised bands, spines in six panels, title lettered directly to second panel, volume and running title to third, with author to fourth, place and date to foot, remaining panels with double line frame surrounding four quadrilobe corner pieces joined by a single line with small tools to each gap, covers with double line border, surrounding a two line double panel design with fleuron corner pieces, roll to edges, and a double line to inner edges, a.e.g. with non-pareil marbled endpapers. The first American edition of a classic work, with the cuts re-engraved (usually in reverse) from the original Bewick edition. Dr. Alexander Anderson (1775-1870) was America's first wood engraver. Pomeroy identifies the fourth edition as the source from which Anderson worked. "It was his major work in these first years." The book is important in America as the means by which many Americans became familiar with the Bewick Quadrupeds, and also because Anderson and other engravers "in the future used Bewick's illustrations as an encyclopedia from which they could draw in order to depict animals both native and foreign."
