Slight cracking to gutters causing binding to be loose, however pages remain attached. Pages and illustrations have light tanning and foxing throughout. Pencil inscription to front pastedown. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Slight crushing to spine ends. Wear marks overall.

From a large collection of Henry Williamson's and his family's books. Includes a specially commissioned small bookplate affixed inside the book confirming this. Bound in three quarter leather Victorian Binding. Book is very good and quite bright. Light edge and surface rubbing. Hinges in good order. The contents are good. Pages age toned. London: J M Dent & Co, 1907 A good to very good copy of this classic work with 24 colour plates, 12 tinted plates and numerous illustrations by Arthur Rackham. 1st edition thus. Rackham first illustrated Ingoldsby Legends in 1898 using a smaller format and without tipped in colour plates. He revisited the work in 1907 adding plates and redrawing some of the other illustrations. The subject matter, including as it does witches, spectres, knights and monks (and a finally repentant Jackdaw), is well suited to Rackham's style. The decorative binding is in clean and tight condition with slight pulling to the spine and a very small bump to the bottom corner of the back board. There is some light ink marking, more prevalent on the back board but with a few spots to the front. Top page edges gilted; remainder untrimmed. Internally the dark green decorative endpapers are present without mark. There is an inscription to the half title. Contents are complete, clean and in very good condition. A popular collection of myths, legends, ghost stories, and poetry by English clergyman Richard Harris Barham, published under pen-pane Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor. First serialised in 1837, they became an immediate success and remained popular through the nineteenth century. Featuring the poem 'The Jackdaw of Rheims,' as well as early transcriptions of the song 'A Flanklyn's Dogge.'With a frontispiece and other illustrations on steel by George Cruikshank and John Leech, artists known for illustrating works of such authors as Charles Dickens, as well as Barham himself. In a lovely half morocco binding signed Zaehnsdorf. Bound in full green morocco, spine with raised bands and titles in gilt, elaborate gilt turn-ins signed with their palette signature by MORRELL, LONDON, top edge gilt, the spine faded as always, the occasional scuff and little scratch, top rear corner bumped, one plate with a lower corner tip folded, else a nice copy.

London: William Heinemann,, 1919. An attractively bound copy of the Ingoldsby Legends. Originally published in 1898, Rackham's illustrated edition was revised and redrawn in 1907 so that "greater prominence could be given to the illustrations by better and larger reproductions, including a greater number of illustrations in colour" (Prefatory Note). These popular tales, which were purportedly based on the author's discovery of old documents, were in fact mostly reworkings of known narrative sources such as Kentish myth and Sir Walter Scott. Thomas Ingoldsby was the pseudonym of Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), whose "knowledge of such areas as heraldry and witchcraft also lends a degree of authenticity to the Legends" (ODNB). Initially appearing in the serial Bentley's Miscellany in 1837, the tales were first published in book form in 1840 and inspired numerous illustrators. Quarto (238 x 182 mm).
