A very useful dictionary, based on personal visits, of what are now the London suburbs - from Abbey Wood to Yiewsley, with short histories, notes on the principal buildings, population figures, etc. "Until now ... there has been nothing approaching Mr. Thorne's work in fulness of detail or convenience of arrangement. If Londoners remain any longer ignorant of the many attractive spots that are still to be found just beyond their own doors, it will not be for want of pleasant and trustworthy guidance" (Pall Mall Gazette, 16th February 1877).
