In 1980 with a crew in a ship made from Malabar timbers held together with coconut rope and painted with fish oil and sugar the author wants more decided to take on legend. To recreate the 7 voyages of Sinbad, from Oman to China, and test whatever truth may have been in the magical, mythical tales of the Arabian nights. Size: Mid Sized Paperback ( 7¾" - 9¾" tall ). 240 pages, including appendices, and illustrated with 16 pages of colour photography, maps, a diagram of the ship and the other line drawings.. Tim Severin recreates one of the most famous travel stories of all time, the seven voyages of Sindbad the Sailor from The Thousand and One Nights. Book is in good condition with minor general wear and tear and moderate page discolouration/spotting throughout. Boards also in good condition with only minor shelf wear and scuffing. Dust jacket is in fair to good condition. The front of the dust jacket shows two 1-inch sized tears and it has been price clipped, otherwise no other pre-loved markings..

The author travelled from Oman on the Arabian Sea in a ship similar to those used 1,000 years ago in an attempt to follow Sinbad's voyages from "A Thousand and One Nights". He travelled to India, Sri Lanka and across the Indian Ocean to Sumatra and the Malacca Straits to the China Seas to Canton in a boat that was a replica of an Arab sailing ship that was used a thousand years ago. It is one of the most remarkable sailing stories of the twentieth century. Tim Severin's classic 8 month adventure which sought to recreate Sinbad's epic journey from the Middle East to China. The 6,000 mile journey is undertaken in a ship –the Sohar- built with materials and methods from Sinbad's time. The whole thrilling adventure is here: across the Arabian Sea to India, then to Sri Lanka and Sumatra, and finally through the China Seas. Although the voyages of Sinbad were full of myth and legend, Severin shows they were undoubtedly based on the exploits of the Arab sea-faring merchants who plied the ancient spice routes to the East.
An excellent copy. Pages are clean and tidy. No marks, staining or creasing, and no inscriptions. Cloth boards are tight and clean. DJ is unclipped and unmarked with no real noticeable wear except for minor largely concealed tanning at the top and bottom of the flaps.
