He graduated from Durham University in 1966 with honors in physics and psychology and worked in the US, Chile, and France before becoming a partner in a multinational management consultancy based in London. He is also the author of The Crimean War (Tempus, 2007). Hugh is widowed with two daughters and four grandchildren.

Colonel Tulloch and Sir John McNeill were sent out to the Crimea in February 1855 to look into the state of the supplies of the army in the east.
