Paperback / softback. New. This 1906 work is an account of the Veitch dynasty, who ran plant nurseries in Devon and London during the nineteenth century. They commissioned several expeditions to search for new and exotic flora for British gardens, they were instrumental in bringing many previously unknown plants into cultivation in Britain.

Apparently it was attacked by bookworms--few areas inside has sign of burrowing, same is true for hardcover's front side. The front area of the hardcover is at the beginning phase of separation. Please handle with care. Despite imperfections mentioned above, the book is still beautiful. Main binding is intact.

[Loosely inserted is the compliments slip from Messrs Veitch, and a three-page history of The House of Veitch. The Veitch Nurseries were the largest group of family-run plant nurseries in Europe during the 19th century. Started by John Veitch sometime before 1808, the original nursery grew substantially over several decades and was eventually split into two separate businesses - based at Chelsea and Exeter - as it became unfeasible to run the whole operation from one location. Half brown morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles to spine in very good condition with sunning to spine and a little rubbing to edges. Inside all pages with top edge gilt and others rough cut in excellent near fine condition with the odd spot of foxing to tissue guards and the occasional page. A lovely example of this Limited Edition.

This is a handsomely illustrated history of the most prominent 19th-century horticultural firm in Britain, with accounts of their most famous botanical collecting explorers and hybridists. It is an essential reference work on plants introduced to Britain during the Victorian era. The Veitch nursery empire was founded about 1800 by John Veitch (1752-1839) and was the first businesses to employ professional plant-hunters.
