Binding sound, text clean. Interior toned, with light foxing and soil. Tissue guarded frontis. B/w plates. Gift inscription to second blank. No stickers or stamps. Not ex-library. 190 pp.

Printed in 1874, assumed first pirated US edition, 'tenth thousand' printing, published by Henry L. Shepard, this book is in fair condition. Text is clean save some thumbing and foxing, binding is solid with wear to edges, back hinge wearing, rubbing to back board, some discoloration, portion of top of spine cover is missing as seen in picture. Gift inscription in front of book (dated 1897). Really neat old book

Front cover and spine are clean and bright, but back cover has a large brown dampstain which, however, does not affect the text or integrity of the binding. In all other respects a solid, clean, bright and still attractive copy of a very scarce Verne title in its first American publication.

Light foxing to front and rear end papers with diagonal crease and edgewear to ffep, otherwise internally clean and crisp, save some loss to p. 120. Fraying and wear to head and foot of spine and corners with light soiling in spots. Spine faintly toned. In custom mylar cover.. Red cloth pictorially and decoratively stamped in black and gilt. This edition of Adventures in the Land of the Behemoth was published without authorization (i.e. pirated) simultaneously with the Scribners authorized first edition.

Very good. A group of Russian and English scientists travel through the Kalahari desert in order to accurately measure the circumference of the Earth, only to discover in the middle of their work that their two countries have gone to war... Essentially a pirate copy, consisting of a slightly abridged version of the Frewer translation published by Scribner the very same day in the US. Although it was billed as one of the cheapest ever books produced in the US at that time, priced at $1.00, it is a handsome looking beast, though it is printed on inferior paper with fewer illustrations than would be usual for a Verne first edition at this… Leer más
