Small 8vo, publisher’s original terra cotta cloth, the upper cover lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt, the spine lettered in gilt. vi, 292, (1 ad). A nice copy in collector’s condition, the rubbing to the cloth is very minimal and confined primarily to the tips, light mellowing to the cloth or age evidence. The stories include Doctor Ox’s Experiment, Master Zacharias, A Drama in the Air, A Winter in the Ice and The Fortieth French Ascension of Mont Blanc.

Jules Verne's "Doctor Ox, and other stories" is a collection of short tales including three that are among Jules Verne's earliest:
· "A Drama in the Air" (appeared in a periodical in 1851, his second story)
· "Master Zacharius" (1854, his fourth)
· "A Winter amid the Ice" (1855, his fifth)
· "Dr. Ox's Experiment" itself did not appear until 1872
· "Ascent of Mont Blanc" by Jules' brother Paul Verne

This 1874 first edition of "Docteur Ox" was published in Paris by Hetzel.Like many other Verne first editions, the title page included was issued in each edition, including later printings. This particular issue features the 'JV' on the front cover and, while the ads have no date on them, all of the listed Verne titles are pre-1874 works.
