In contemporary sheep with red morocco title label on the spine. A second volume of the Revised Code was issued in Samuel Pleasants in 1808. Binding is worn with chipping at the head of the spine; joints starting; contemporary owner notes marked through on the front endpapers. Textblock remains solid; pages generally darkened. Interesting look into early Virginia law from, according to Shaw & Shoemaker, 1748-1802 with substantive material from laws governing militias to laws about slavery and free blacks. Herein are also reprinted the Virginia Declaration of Rights (6 May 1776) and the first Virginia Constitution (29 June 1776). Uncommon. Shaw & Shoemaker 5512.

Foxed, index leaves browned. Good to Good+. The new Acts include a detailed Code restricting the rights of slaves and Free Negroes, passed after the Nat Turner insurrection. The laws prohibit their religious instruction, except upon permission of their ministers, and then only by white preachers; bar their owning or keeping weapons or ammunition, or distributing liquor; prescribe the punishment of death "without benefit of clergy" for assaulting a white person with intent to kill; bar assemblies "by free negroes or mulattoes," as well as slaves.
