Octavo, dark yellow cloth covers with titles on top and spine in red, and picture of a helmet in black on top cover. 306 pages. Slightly darkened on spine. No names or marks, clean and tight. No dust jacket. Mystery novel set during World War I, originally published in England as " Bretherton: Khaki or Field Grey?." Eric Ambler named it as one of his top five spy stories. 092508C

New York: Dodd Mead & Company, 1929. English novelist Walter Frederick Morris (1892-1975) wrote this mystery based upon actual events during World War One; it was issued in the UK by Geoffrey Bles with the title "Bretherton." Eric Ambler, the master, thought highly of it. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the Third Printing (stated) of the First American Edition, lacking the dustjacket. Despite going to multiple printings, and with a popular edition by Grosset & Dunlap, it is rather an uncommon title. Yellow cloth binding with red titling on the spine and front cover, which is ruled in black witha black German helmet. Clean text; 306 pages; red topstain, others deckle. Very lightly bumped (kissed, really); spine darkened but lettering remains bright and clear. Light rub to head and foot. A solid copy.. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

In the color illustrated dust jacket that shows edge-wear, including a one-inch perforation on the fold between the front panel and front flap. First American edition, published the same year as the English edition (Geoffrey Bles). During WWI Morris initially served in the Norfolk Regiment as an infantryman; by the end of the war he commanded the Cycle Battalion of the XIII Army Corps.
