1936. Original artwork presenting a solution to the challenges of living in a flat One of the cartoonist's famously whimsical cartoons, published within How to Live in a Flat in 1936 on page 65. The illustrator's inventive wit provided the English language with a term to describe an implausible, ingenious, or overcomplicated construction or design. Between 1932 and 1933 Heath Robinson contributed a series of cartoons to The Sketch magazine which provided solutions to the challenges of living in a contemporary flat and using limited space to full potential. This series was the basis for the volume entitled How to Live in a Flat, published by Hutchinson in 1936, with text by K. R. G. Browne (1895-1940). It was the first full-length book collaboration between Browne and Robinson.
