Pages and binding are presentable with no major defects. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Overall a good condition item. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some light marking and sunning. Unclipped jacket has heavy edgewear with some areas of loss, heavy tears, chips and, creasing. Visible sunning to spine. Notable rubbing to surfaces. Scuffing to edges.

The text is illustrated with black-and-white photography and illustrations. Red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured insert to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel, and, within that insert black Japanese characters. Gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Black and white illustrated dustwrapper with red coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Sympathetic, thoughtful and with a wealth of sensible and acute observation, this book is a valuable addition to the literature on contemporary Japan. In it the author describes the feeling and texture of the countryside itself, the status of the Japanese woman, Buddhism and Shinto, and there is also a couple of chapters on Japanese theatre.
