A scarce original edition sold despite its condition as a historical reference copy. 16mo, 6 3/4" tall, 294 pages (the essential content without original covers), spine covered by leather of uncertain origin and attached to a thin piece of wood which may have been part of the original cover on the front side only). This is a fair copy only and sold as is. The covers are missing along with endpapers; title page missing and the possible contents page, along with most of title page (publisher name, city, and date present on a small portion of lower title page); the primary contents are present, paper is moderately yellowed and foxed throughout, first and last page somewhat soiled from exposure, a few pages are marginally marked, many pages are dog-eared and the fore-edges are roughed with use but still supple. Because paper is not fragile, this could be rebound despite condition. Priced accordingly.

Nice solid copy with expected external wear, hinges internally lightly cracked but very secure, text block sound, pages age-toned but clean and readily legible, a couple of tiny ink squiggles inside rear cover, no names or other markings.. Hard Cover. Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Webster is, of course, most well-known for his work on what is now simply called Webster's Dictionary, which solidified our modern idea of how a dictionary should be arranged. His works in general helped shape the course of American education.

Text contains 13 sections for study, including the rivers of the U.S., the discovery of America, Indian Wars, etc. First published in 1802; volume II, published separately, first appeared in 1804. Skeel 540.

New Haven: from Sidney's Press for Increase Cooke, 1806. Second edition, 12mo, pp. 224, [2] table of contents; contemporary 1/4 sheep and drab paper-covered boards, rubbed and worn at extremes, but tight and firm, text browning throughout with some spotting, overall a good, sound copy. The volume is divided into eight sections, numbered 14 to 21, and continues the historical, geographical, agricultural, and political discussions begun in volume I, first published in 1802. The second edition of vol. II adds the text of Washington's Farewell Address. Josiah Meigs, president of the University of Georgia, praised both volumes in 1804 in a letter to his friend Webster: "I am much pleased with your manner of describing our North America. You have risen from the briars and brambles of detail and given us a luminous and comprehensive view of a WHOLE. I shall use my influence to introduce it into our schools... ."
