County by county, Beattie enumerates the history and traditions of Scotland in this illustrated guide to physician and poet William Beattie. A first edition of this work, accompanied by 121 steel engravings drawn in situ. With forty three illustrations to volume I, including a folding map, collated and complete. All illustrations are present, but the plate of Kelso Abbey called for at the rear is the frontispiece. With seventy eight plates to volume II, collated but lacks both plates of Lock Katrine, the first plate of Inverness called for, the illustration of Lock Oich, and the second plate of Loch Leven called for. In a quarter calf binding over marbled boards. Externally, generally smart. Decorative spine banding and twin red leather spine labels. Marbled endpapers and page edges. In very good condition. Some wear to covers, corners bumped with a couple of corners chipped. Surface nicks/chips to leather around extremities, some rubbing to boards. Endpapers clean, no previous owners inscriptions. Engraved title pages with quite dark foxing, Most plates have dark foxing throughout. Map has tear to folded corner. Pages with some mild foxing else overall clean and tight.
