A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy, nicely bound in leather over boards, gilt stamped designs and ruling to front cover, lettering and designs to spine. Moderate rubbing to, scuffing of tips, edges, spine head and foot. Gilt edges all round. Handsome penned gift inscription at first free endpaper. Moderate, uniform foxing throughout. Two title pages, at the second, a fetching black-and-white engraving of a young lass ogling a caged bird, and another at frontis, tissue-guarded. Plentiful additional black-and-white plates, also tissue-guarded, by Cheney, Cushman et al., after drawings by John Gilbert. 324 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Cowper is credited with heavily influencing the future direction of English poetry, by writing of common scenes and the real countryside. Having been deemed insane and incarcerated between 1763 and 1765, he became an evangelical Christian. His religion led him to write many hymns. He is also known for his active stance in opposition of slavery. His poetry was quoted by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. many times in the course of the civil rights movement. In full calf with gilt detailing to the spines and boards. Externally with rubbing to the extremities of the boards and to the spine, where the titles have been effaced. Internally, there are contemporary ink inscriptions to the front blanks, each dated 1825. Internally, firmly bound. Generally clean and bright, with a little spotting to the first and last few pages and the plates. Good

Both volumes are lavishly illustrated with numerous engravings. The Minor Poems of William Cowper hold parts I and II bound in one volume. Rebound in full calf bindings with gilt detailing. Externally, both volumes are generally sound with only some light rubbing, and slight loss to the tail of the spines. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound and bright, with only some occasional instances of light spotting. Neat copperplate ink inscriptions to the verso of the front free endpapers. Very Good

Pasted to both front and rear end-papers of The Task and Table Talk are the two leaves of a Prospectus [on pink paper] advertising this set as 'Sharpe's Cabinet Edition in Three Volumes'. Early half morocco, uncut, top edges gilt, spine edges and corners rubbed, overall a good set with firm joints and clean text.
