London, Bell and Daldy; George Bell & Sons, 1872-1874, First edition of each volume. . orig pictorial cloth, elaborate decoration in gilt & black on front covers & spines, front coves with mounted oval color plate as issued, all edges gilted, about 20 plates in volume II with dampstain, mostly marginal, light edge rubbing, else near fine. . 4to [25.5 x 17.5 cm]; 2 volumes, viii, 152; [iii], 140 pp, 108 colored lithographed plates (chromolithographs), each with tissue guard, general index, systematic index. . The attractive plates, several of which are of lady's slipper orchids, were printed by Fawcett of Driffield from paintings by Lydon. The two volumes constitute the complete set, each volume being issued separately, the first volume being successful it was decided to issue a second series, which is why most sets found are with the second edition of the first volume. Bound in half burgundy morocco over marbled boards with five raised bands and gilt titles to the spine, green end-papers. Condition very good, the binding is rubbed at the edges and corners and on the bands, previous owner's name to front end-paper, light spotting to the first and last few pages, including the title and frontispiece, there are a few sporadic spots here and there in the book, a few on the margins of the plates, but generally in very clean condition throughout. Contains 54 full page plate illustrations, all hand-colouring. The colouring is still clean and bright and fine, beautiful illustrations. Size: 4to - over 9" - 12" tall

Spines faded with some softening to ends and discolouration. Corners bumped. Bookplates on front endpapers. Yellow front free endpaper missing in vol. 1. Plates are based on the watercolor paintings of Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917) whose initials appear as A.F.L. on the plates. Lydon was an English watercolour artist, illustrator, and engraver of natural history and landscapes.

Ownership bookplate and inscription to the front pastedown and endpaper respectively. Internally, generally firmly bound, with a little straining to the hinges, which remain firm. Pages have the occasional instance of spotting, but are otherwise bright. Very Good
