Two volumes in one, providing the eighth edition of this popular long poem ruminating on the death of various loved ones. By Edward Young, an English poet of the late 17th and early to mid 18th centuries. GOOD condition. Front cover and first endpaper DETACHED from the binding. Leather scuffed, with uneven darkening and fading, as well as minor soiling and staining. Leather split along the entire length of the hinges, with some loss and peeling along the lower edge. Ownership signature and armorial bookplate present. Minor staining to the text. General toning to the paper.

Hardcover. 12mo, 17.5cm, xi,347p., copper engraved frontis plate and engraved title page with vignette, glossary, index, contemporary full calf, gilt decorated spine, front cover detached and re glued, spine title label wanting, binding edges worn and lower spine chipped, a good copy internally clean and sound (ds1). ~ The best known work of English poet, Edward Young (1683 1765) first published in 1742. "If he did not invent melancolia and moonlight' in literature, he did much to spread the fashionable taste for them." (Ency. Britannia, 1911).

The material for the Life of Young is taken from Johnson's Lives of the Poets, "written by Herbert Croft, with the critique of Dr. Johnson, and compared with the Biographia Britannica, and other respectable authorities." The first part of this now famous poem was published in 1742 and achieved immediate popularity, both at home and especially in Germany and France where Young was considered by some to be a more powerful poet than Milton. The poem was greatly admired by Diderot, Madame De Stael and Robespierre, the last of whom is said to have kept the book under his pillow during the Revolution. ESTC T43095.

12mo, pp. [xiv], [ii], 300; with engraved frontispiece; apart from some light offsetting from the frontispiece, a clean crisp copy throughout; in contemporary sprinkled calf, spine ruled and tooled in gilt with red morocco label lettered in gilt, some minor rubbing, but overall a very desirable copy, with neat presentation inscription on front pastedown: 'Notting Hill House Boarding School. This book was presented to Miss Ann Pocock, at the Midsummer Vacation 1794. In Approbation of her uniform good conduct', with the later armorial bookplate of J. Hornsby Wright opposite.
