The first trade edition, printed at The Complete Press in West Norwood and issued alongside a deluxe limited issue. 8vo. xxii, 122pp. Blue cloth lettered in gold at the spine, with black lettering and two gilt-stamped Rackham decorations to the upper board. With illustrated endpapers, a title page decoration, a colour frontispiece and eleven full-page colour plates each with a captioned protector (the protector for the final plate detached and laid-in), plus twenty-four black and white illustrations as head and tail pieces, or in the text. Some wear to the cloth at the backstrip ends and several corner tips. The hinges a little tender, the free endpapers browned and with a little edge-creasing and a single tiny tear to the frontispiece. Blue cloth hardcover is worn at the edges with some very small splits top & tale of the spine & the spine is darkened & spotted. The binding is still holding firm but the endpapers are darkened with age and the name of a previous owner is neatly written in the corner together with the date 1920, Internally the book has been carefully read and the pages are clean with just a few small marks. No torn, loose or missing pages. 12 colour plates (all present) by Arthur Rackham with tissue guards & some b/w drawings in the text. Collection of Fairy tales from the 8 Allies of the great 1914-18 War.

Tail fore corners bumped, some light rubbing at the hinges, light overall foxing to the free endpapers with a bit on the pastedowns, light dampstain at the tail of the front free endpaper and the next two leaves, a sliver of unobtrusive foxing along the fore edge of numerous pages. Light scuffing to the cloth of the rear cover. The slipcase has light rubbing to all edges, with wear to the head and tail of the leather.; These 13 collected tales represent the traditions of the Allied nations of World War I and, arguably, amount to uplifting, positive propaganda, possibly for the young and most certainly for their parents.
