A proclamation issued due oncerns that by departing in advance of their convoys, British trading vessels were putting themselves and their crews unduly at risk. A few other small tears or tissue repairs. Very good. A rare broadside announcing the decree of the English government that all foreign goods destined for British colonies must first pass through England, a policy of mercantilism later termed the "triangle trade." "This program permitted the profits from colonial trade and commerce to center in England, promoted British shipping, and enabled the British government to support itself by taxing this trade as it flowed through England" - DAH. The English government began its mercantilist policies under the Commonwealth government, in a series of "navigation acts" which regulated English trade. Silked on verso and stitched into 19th-century marbled paper boards, with leather label on front cover. Boards measure 5.5 in. x 9 in. Broadside (unfolded) measures 10.5 in. x 17 in. Boards age-toned and lightly rubbed. Broadside lightly age-toned. RW Consignment. Shelved in Case 7. A broadside of a proclamation issued by King Charles II calling for the arrest of the regicides Edward Whalley and William Goffe. Edward Whalley was a leader in Cromwell's army, and also one of the signatories to the death warrant for Charles I. William Goffe, Whalley's son-in-law, also served as a judge at the trial of the king, and was a Roundhead politician and military leader. At the Restoration, Whalley and Goffe fled to the colonies in New England. Charles II issued this warrant for their arrest, though neither were ever detained or tried.
