Some loss at a corner. Hardbound. Very good. William Morris Meredith (1799-1873) was a Philadelphian lawyer and politician. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1812, and was was admitted to the bar in 1817. He served in the Pennsylvania General Assembly (1824-1828), and was president of the Philadelphia City Council (1834-1849. He was also United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1841. President Zachary Taylor, wanting a Pennsylvanian Whig for his cabinet, appointed William M. Meredith to be the 19th Secretary of the Treasury. He began his term in office in March 1849. Meredith strongly opposed the free trade legislation passed the year before. Original full black cloth binding, both boards embossed in blind with an gold image of the Webster Memorial, bearing the legend "He Still Lives". Hardbound. First edition of this collection of memorial tributes to Webster from his colleagues in the Congress of the United States. Webster (1782-1852) was a lawyer, famous for the power of his oratory. He served in the House of Representatives from 1812, and then in the Senate from 1827 until his death.
