Very Good. xxiii pp 1-463 The fourth edition of Daniel Defoe's novel bound in contemporary boards which are rubbed, stained and worn to the corners. The text is complete, the pages are cut unevenly, some browned edges and occasional spotting. The binding is tight and has been neatly repaired with a brown cloth spine, leather label with gilt title, end papers replaced. Overall very good. Very Good 1809

It was once attributed to Daniel Defoe, and to Jonathan Swift, though it's now believed that it probably is a genuine memoir. Evidence of a real officer named Captain George Carleton was discovered in the 1920.Bookplate of Robert Berkeley to the front pastedown, an English political writer and significant activist for Catholic emancipation of the 1770s. London: Tho. Astley, 1743. Second Edition. Full leather. Very good. The Memoirs Of Cap. George Carleton, An English Officer, published in 1743. Often attributed to Daniel DeFoe.. Small octavo, [8pp. dedication], 352pp, 16pp ads. Leather binding, gilt title on spine, 5 raised bands, gilt decoration on cover, some cracking to lower spine, but binding is solid. Contains the bookplate of the Carleton family, with inscription by Edward Carleton, dated 1742. (Lowndes II, 614) This copy appears to have been owned by Edward Carleton Holmes, Sr, a solicitor from London, who lived until 1909. This is the second edition, with the text matching the first edition from 1728. This book is actually the fifth time the book was printed, but under different titles: 1728 (2-times), 1740 (scarce copy), 1741 and 1743. Some believed the book to have been written by Daniel DeFoe, but that that theory was rebutted by different studies in the 1970s. London: Printed for Tho. Astley, 1743. Book. Very good condition. Hardcover. First thus edition. Octavo (8vo). [viii], 352 pages of text, followed by 16 pages of publisher's advertisement. Title page preceded by an additional page (printed on one side only) of publisher's advertisement. One letter of text on a dedication page is marred off and there is minor staining, but the text is otherwise remarkably clean and bright. Original full leather binding is quite weakened at the hinges, with moderate rubbing to extremities, but remains intact and attractive. Attributed to Defoe by Moore and Novak. Moore 500. Engraved bookplate on front paste down endpaper. Title continues "...Containing an account of the conduct of the Earl of Peterborough, and other general officers, admirals, &c. and several remarkable transactions both by Sea and Land.
