The forebears of Polaris were on Adm. Peary's team mushing to the North Pole. "Introduction" by Capt. Robert A. Bartlett, who sailed the "Roosevelt" for Peary, and the "Karluk" for Stefansson. Bartlett called Polaris "the finest Eskimo dog in the world". Illustrated with many photographs.

New York: The Macmillan Company. Very Good. 1923. Hardcover. 137 p. 21 cm. Sound and square binding in cloth-covered boards. Bump to top edge of both boards and the text block. Light wear to corner tips. Spine titles are rubbed and mostly gone. Some soil and foxing to both boards, more visible in certain light. Last few pages have a stain to the top margin. Otherwise the inside pages are clean and unmarked. Endpapers are toned. The story of the author and his dog Polaris, with numerous black and white photographs of this dog and others. Polaris was acquired in 1914 when the author went to Flag Island with Admiral Robert Peary to see some of the dogs which had drawn his sledges to the North Pole. Polaris was a puppy from the litter of one of these dogs. .

The book is in near fine condition. Previous owner's name/date written on the front loose end page. No other ownership marks/writing present within. Hinges tight, interior pages bright. Moderate edge wear/tear, rubbing, soiling, spotting to the dust jacket.

Slight spine cock BUT: stays tightly closed when stood on its spine. . Spine lettering a bit faded. Book text like new. Zero internal flaws. There are 27 full page plates from photos and 14 in text. Very nice DJ complete with $1.50 price. White DJ has aged a bit. Its edges & extrems a bit soiled. Minor edgewear in the form of 1/4" closed tears, but no chips. An unusual story, it has many ties to arctic exploration. Polaris wound up being the lead dog of Grenfell's (the Labrador doctor) personal dog team. .

Peary was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for claiming to have reached the geographic North Pole with his expedition on April 6, 1909. "Introduction" by Capt. Robert A. Vincent (1866-1935) was a collector of books and bookplates, an amateur historian, with focus on the Pacific NW. From Spokane, Washington, he was President of the Old National Bank of Spokane 1920-1933. This is the true story of Polaris, a dog the author received from Admiral Peary, gathered off of Flag Island in Casco Bay, where Peary's dogs that had pulled him to the Pole were living, this being one of the pups.
