Ownership signature, dated 1823. Crossed-out name on last page. Title-page has been repaired with new paper backing. Exterior hinges cracked and worn, spine repaired. Light foxing throughout. Plates have some foxing and large plate at rear has a stain. Still a good usable copy.

Near fine in modern recassing of 1/4 light green cloth and marbled paper covered boards with a dark green leather title block with gilt text and rules. An octavo of 8 1/16 by 5 inches. The contents are largely free of any foxing, staining or age tanning. 197 pages of text followed by six engraved plates four of which fold-out and a 13 page index. The upper 1/2 inch of the first four plates are faintly dampness stained which stains do not extend beyond the upper margins. An extremely handsome and tight copy.

Second edition, illustrated with six engraved plates (of which 4 are folding), octavo, pp xvi, 211, (i) (+ one page advertisement for the author's "Culture of the Vine"), slightly age-toned internally, fore-edge slightly marked (which transfers lightly to the margin of page 97 and the opposing blank), the title page a little more marked, but otherwise very sound and tight internally, recently bound in paper covered boards with a printed label on the spine in very clean condition. This edition has an additional plate to the 1790 edition, plus additional material. The plates are each dated September 1, 1805. Significant to the library of the vine. A handsome volume.

The book on Vines was first published in 1790, and the book on the Pineapple was first published in 1779 with only two plates, the two books issued here in one volume with continuous pagination. Second Edition of what Henrey describes as the most important and influential work on viticulture published in England in the eighteenth century (first published in quarto format in 1790). The author was gardener to William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, third Duke of Portland on his estate of Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire. With a folding engraved plate of insect pests, a folding engraved plan of a stove greenhouse (each with an un-numbered explanation), pp xviii, 186, extremely clean internally, full calf, a little worn and marked, with some abrasions leading to loss of surface, nevertheless still a good copy with presence. With the armorial bookplate on the front endpaper and the signature on the title page of Richard Cooper, one of the original subscribers. The rare first edition of a very important work. [The subscriber's list accounts for about 333 copies. It is a roll-call of the landed gentry and their gardeners, and shows the eagerness with which Speechly's expertise was desired in text. Handsome contemporary full tree calf, gilt spine with morocco lettering piece, marbled endpapers; pp. xviii + 186 + [ii], 2 engraved plates (1 folding); previous owner's signature to title page, hinges tender with splitting spine and lettering piece partially removed, internally near fine, overall very good. First edition. An important treatise on pineapple cultivation on Britain, preceding his A Treatise on the Culture of the Vine (1790) : ""These works by Speechly were the most important on the culture of the pineapple and the vine published during the eighteenth century, and it may be said that they laid the foundation for the improvements which followed" (Blanche Henrey). Speechly was the gardener of the third Duke of Portland, in which role he developed a number of principles of hot-house gardening, principally not over-heating it during the winter.
