A later printing with facs of a letter to Charles Fox (the author's son) from Jared Sparks in 1847. * Jared Sparks (May 10, 1789 – March 14, 1866) was an American historian, educator, and Unitarian minister. He served as the 17th President of Harvard University from 1849 to 1853. A later printing thus in then original brown blond-stamped cloth, backstrip missing, contents are exceedingly well preserved.

Boston: Charles Fox, 1848. Fox, born in Roxbury Mass., near the scene of revolutionary excitement, began his nautical career as a cabin boy. After a narrow escape from privateers on a merchant ship, he eventually wound up aboard the 20-gun "Protector" built by Massachusetts for service in the Colonial Navy. He recounts his two cruises in that ship under Capt. Williams, his capture and imprisonment in the Jersey prison ship, his escape in Jamaica, and service in the Colonial Flora. Scarce, not in Smith. The book is notable for its excellent engraved plates. Bound in publisher's blind stamped cloth with gold-decorated backstrip. Some wear to spine ends, a very good copy.. 9 x 16 cm. vi-240 pp. b/w engraved frontispiece and plates.

In his second cruise, he was captured by the British and put aboard the prison ship Jersey. Conditions on this prison ship were intolerable, and Fox was forced to "join the British." Originally known as 'The Revolutionary Adventures of Ebenezer Fox', this work was a relatively unknown work on lesser-known aspects of the American Revolutionary War. Ebenezer Fox was a militia soldier who signed on to an American ship protecting shipping routes against the British. While on the ship, he was captured and imprisoned by the British on Jamaica. His most-remembered work, 'Adventures', was written years after the war, but was his own first-hand account of his role in the American Revolution.
