Covers are somewhat rubbed at the raised decoration, but very clean. Spine mildly toned. Binding is tight and text clean, with contemporary heraldic bookplate on front pastedown, from the library of Charles Hebbert. Fiction. RGR.

First edition, first issue, with the title the same on the half-title page and title-page. The 16 page publishers catalog appended to rear is dated November, 1861. [McCutcheon catalog, 438]. Text free from foxing, as is common for this title. Full page engravings retain original tissue guards, which do show moderate foxing. Light rubbing to cloth at headband and corners very lightly bumped. A very good+ copy of this fragile little book. . Hardcover. Very Good+. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Inner hinges are perfect. 4.75" wide by 7.5" tall. Bound in the original brown (terra cotta) cloth, lettered in shiny gold on the spine and with blind-stamped borders and ornaments on the front and rear covers. Condition would be FINE but for small chips at the head of the spine and light fraying at the foot. NO fading. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are clean, crisp, and free of markings. NO foxing. With 16 b/w illustrations. Original pale yellow endpapers. This American edition is the TRUE FIRST EDITION in book form since it was published in November 1860, some 12 months before the first English edition. In a fine early 20th c. full black morocco binding, gilt lettering and rules, four gilt decorations, one at each corner, four raised bands, ribbon marker, gilt-patterned end pages, the binding signed with the stamped initials O.B. at bottom front turn in.
