Philadelphia: John E. Potter and Company, 1874. "Comprising the Author's Introduction to the Leading Men at Washington, with the Origin and Organization of the Detective Police, and a Graphic History of his Rich Experiences, North and South, His Perilous Adventures, Hairbreadth Escapes and Valuable Services, Etc., Etc." Indeed. Baker (1826-1868) packed a lot into a short life. America's foremost espionage agent, he had a distressing habit of also spying on his bosses, and went in and out of favor. His mysterious death has provided fodder to conspiracy buffs from 1868 until this day. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition, published posthumously and quite rare (cf. WorldCat). Maroon cloth binding, now more of a reddish-brown, with blindstamped title and design on the boards, gilt lettering on the spine. Corners are moderately bumped and there is wear to the head and foot of the spine. Many illustrations, frontis portrait of General Baker. Clean text, very bright. No…

Descripción:
Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1865. The fascinating, heroic, and tragic story of Albert D. Richardson (1833-1869) gripped the nation several times. A popular journalist for the NY "Tribune," he was captured at Vicksburg and imprisoned as a Union spy. His escape is documented here. Later, his love for an actress and their attempts to obtain her divorce resulted in the abusive husband attempting to murder Richardson - twice, and Richardson and his love were married on his deathbed. In a very political trial, his murderer was freed. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition; a large and heavy octavo. Clean text; 509 pages of narrative and three pages of a musical score dedicated to the "Nameless Heroine" who helped him escape, with her portrait engraving. The pages are quite bright and readable today, although a bit stiff, giving the volume a shaken feel. Previous-owner signatures to the front paste-down and Title page; Bookplate of a different owner on the front…

Descripción:
Philadelphia & Cincinnati: George W. Childs & Applegate & Co., 1862. "Parson" Brownlow (1805-1877) presents an interesting type. He was anti-Catholic, pro-slavery, a member of the Know Nothings, who reversed himself to become one of the most radical of the Radical Republicans after the Civil War. Always known for his combative and vituperative nature, as Governor of Tennessee he became a formidable foe of the Ku Klux Klan. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition. Green cloth binding, stamped, with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 458 pages, with eight pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. The last page advert is for Brownlow's newspaper, the "Knoxville Whig." Bumped and with a bit of a fray, mildly cocked. Quercus awards this copy a Minus grade due to some flood marking affecting the frontis and papers up to the Preface. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good Minus/No Jacket.
