This history is the digital edition of a 620-page book by Alonzo Lewis and James R. Newhall, originally published in 1865. It consists of two text files (2.1Mb) in doc format and 32 image files (2.2Mb) in jpg and gif formats, digitized in 2009 and issued on CD-Rom. The story of Lynn, one of the earliest settlements of Massachusetts, is presented in this volume in five chapters. The first chapter (102 pages) contains a notice of early voyages and discoveries in the territory; an account of the natives, with biographical sketches of some of the most prominent of them; a description of the topography of the place; some of its natural history; and an account of some of its business enterprises (shoemaking, in particular). It ends with a look at "peculiar customs and doings in religious matters." The fruits of their labors along tortuous rivers and valleys now sparkle like pearls in the diadem that is Idaho, the Gem of the Mountains." 12mo, 5.5 x 7.5, 444 pages, illustrated. Binding is tight; interior is clean and bright, except for inscriptions on FEP and FFEP, and one-inch tears at the bottom of two sheets. Red buckram cover with black stamping shows nominal wear (i.e., rubbed edges).

For genealogists who have worked on families of Norwich, Connecticut, Calkin's History needs no elaborate description. It ranks among the best and is often cited in histories of New England and genealogies of New England families.
Though designed, as Ms. Calkins said, "to be strictly a History, not a collection of Genealogies," the volume contains a wealth of information on the lives of Norwich people -- information not typically found in family genealogies. It is especially noteworthy for its treatment of the founding fathers and their dealings with Uncas, chief of the Mohegans, but there is much information as well about the town's maritime, religious, and commercial activities.

Santa Maria, CA: Janaway Publishing, 2003. Trade paperback, octavo (8.25 x 5.5), 296 pages. This is a facsimile of a volume originally published in 1911 (according to info on the obverse of the title page), with an added all-name index. We find no explanation in this volume of the discrepancy between the terminal year of the history (1916) and the original publication date. Black and white illustrations are a bit degraded in reproduction from the original, but the text is crisp.
