This rare "first" of Noel Coward's poetry collection, containing two long verse sequences and 24 shorter poems, is in Fine condition, but with a small signature of the original owner on the front endpaper. The original unclipped dust jacket is in close to Fine condition. I've placed it into a Brodart protective sleeve. See photo. The book is pound in purple cloth with die-stamped gilt spine lettering. Little, Brown, and Company, 1972. This collection of Ogden Nash's poems, published posthumously, includes many poems that first appeared in various magazines of the period. The book is an oversized paperback in its original wraps (click on photo). The covers show some light rubbing at the spine tips and light foxing. The binding is secure, and the pages are clean, white, and sparkling throughout. The humorous drawings by Robert Binks are a delight and nicely complement the text. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell This handsome, ornately decorated volume is in Very Good+ condition (click on photo). It contains not only all of Goldsmith's major works, but a bigraphical essay by Henry T.Tuckerman, a critique of Goldsmith's work and memories of him by Dr. Aikin, and verses written by other poets at the time of Dr. Goldsmith's death. The book is undated but is probably from around the turn of the century. The book is bound in light brown cloth, with elaborate Empire-style design elements in gilt and black. It also has all-edge gilt. There is a signature from a former owner on the front free endpaper. The binding is tight and secure. The pages are white and sparkling throughout. New York: A.L. Burt This lovely edition of Tennyson's poems and several plays is in close to Very Good condition, but with a very small spine chip (see photo) and corner rubbing. The book is bound in green cloth, with an elaborate lyre, vine and grape motif in gilt on the front panel and spine. There is also top-edge gilt. No date is listed. As for the interior, there is a name of the original owner, as well as a graduation inscription to him. The binding is tight and secure, although the hinge paper in the rear is starting. The book has 927 pages. The pages are mainly clean but I noticed ink notations from the former owner in just four of the poems: Sir Galahad, Ulysses, The Princess, and In Memoriam. The book is bound in a forest green cloth with a decorative gilt shield on the front panel and die-stamped gilt spine titles. The book features all-edge gilt and beveled edges. The spine tips show rubbing and fraying. The book has chocolate brown endpapers and a portrait of Scott with printed signature as a frontis, with tissue guard, as well as 11 other full-page illustrations throughout the book. The text is set in double columns with a red line border. The text is clean and bright throughout, with only minimal foxing, mainly on the blank pages opposite the acidic endpapers. The leather is slightly rubbed at the crown of the spine.The book includes silk moiré endpapers and a sewn-in ribbon bookmark. It includes more than 50 illustrations by the author, as well as famous illustrators George Cruikshank (of Dickens fame) and John Leech. Also included is a frontis plate portrait of the author, with tissue guard. This handsome volume also includes a biographical introduction by Anne Ritchie, Thackeray's daughter. The book is in Very Good condition and is bound in blue illustrated covers with repetitive floral designs and letter "T's" in dark blue surrounded by a dark blue border on both front and rear panels. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1899. This handsome 12-volume set of the works of Eugene Field ranges in condition from Very Good to Fine. (Click on photo.) The books are bound in a handsome, deep green satiny cloth, with a gilt border and gilt vignette on the front panel, as well as gilt spine lettering and top-edge gilt. The books are clean and tightly bound, with rough-cut pages. There are no marks of insciptions from former owners. Seven of the 12 volumes are in Fine, sparkling condition, inside and out. Three of the remaining, Volumes I, VII, and XI, show some wear, including some fading of the spine lettering. A fourth, Volume VI, would be Fine except for a rubbed area at the top of the spine cloth. A fifth, Volume XII, has water staining to the pages, which does not affect readability and the exterior covers are fine. Each volume includes a lovely frontis engraving with tissue guard. It is a delightful collectible for anyone who enjoys Hoffenstein's highly amusing poetry (and back in 1930, the country desperately needed to be amused. As Carl Van Vechten's final novel noted that same year, the party was over). The dust jacket has a tiny chip at the spine bottom. It has the necessary "points" that make it a "first," namely, "First Published in 1919" on the copyright pages, and 32 pages of Methuen book ads in the rear, the final page of which is dated February 1919. The title pages includes a vignette illustration of a sitting World War I soldier. Forty-six poems are included in this collection. The book is bound in red cloth with gilt spine lettering. The spine is toned a bit, but the gilt lettering is bright and crisp. It also has top-edge gilt. The book has the embossment of a former owner on the front free endpaper. The binding is tight and secure, and the text pages are clean. The rough cut page edges were less than brilliantly cut by the original owner.
