Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows
) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions…

The rubaiyat are considered by some to exalt earthly pleasure, consider death, and point out the unreliability of religion in addressing human issues. No Place Stated: A. R. Tommasini. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1970. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Bump to head of spine, possibly in the making. Light toning to the very edges of the boards, common to this edition.; A selection of verse fragments from John Greenleaf Whittier's classic Snow-Bound : A Winter Idyl. Printer Tommy Tommasini chose fragments that described scenes that the family in this narrative poem would have witnessed. Whittier's poem, in total, describes a family's conversations inside a snowed-in New England farmhouse. The verse fragments are accompanied by the linoleum engravings of Czech-born artist George Kuthan. His Prague and Paris studies in graphic arts, printmaking, and painting served him in Canada where he taught printmaking at university level, and incorporated etching and both wood- and linoleum-engraving into his graphic arts and books. His works in this book are sympathetic to the verse fragments and are boldly styled. One of an unnumbered,…

Calais, VT: Z Press. Near Fine. 2000. Limited Edition. Softcover. Small light stain at the tail corner of the front cover and it's corresponding French flap. Similar light stain to the tail corner of the back cover.; This is a single poem of disjointed, yet flowing phrases, widely-spaced, and to be read in a linear fashion. Author Jeff Clark is an award-winning experimental poet, editor, prolific book designer, and occasional publisher of radical and outsider books. Tipped in, facing the poem, is a black on white reproduction of a linocut print by artist Jasper Johns. Occasionally, his art was based on an ambiguous image that used multistable perception to resolve in different ways. This image depicts either the profiles of 2 or 3 human heads, or a tilted, misshapen vase and its shadow. Renowned artist Jasper Johns was instrumental in bringing common objects and mass culture topics into modern art. Johns presented visual ideas to be interpreted and resolved by the viewer. This is Clark's second…

Previous owner's name in ink on front pastedown. The front endpaper has a small abrasion, possibly from sticker removal. Pastedowns and endpapers lightly toned.; Tannhäuser, the full title being Tannhäuser and the Minnesängers' Contest at Wartburg, is Richard Wagner's epic, poetic, opera of the opposition of sacred, otherworldly love and profane, worldly love. The mythical character Tannhäuser is a medieval German poet and songwriter who abandons his chaste Elizabeth and descends to be with Venus in her ethereal, subterranean realm of Venusberg. Dissatisfied, he ascends to the real-worldly Wartburg. reunites with Elisabeth, enters the songwriting contest of the Minnesängers, and horrifies the staid, pious listeners with his song of earthly, sensual love. Amsterdam, Netherlands: Surrealistisch Kabinet. Very Good. 1968. Softcover. Wear and creasing to all edges of the wraps. Diagonal, light crease to the back. Tiny white spot to front.; This is Ted Joans' (1928-2003) 12-line poem The Truth, which he occasionally titled The Poet in readings. In this book, the composition of the poem's lines differs significantly from Joans' original composition of lines, which he used consistently in readings and printed form. This alternate composition appears to be unique to this Surrealistisch Kabinet edition. Compared to Joans' original composition, this is composed in staggered, alternating lines of different typefaces and cases. Compared to the original, this composition combines some short lines into longer ones, and breaks some longer lines into shorter ones, sometimes lines of a single word. "IF YOU SHOULD SEE A M A N / walking down in a crowded / street // talking // ALOUD // TO HIMSELF // DON'T RUN // IN THE // OPPOSITE DIRECTION // BUT RUN // TOWARDS HIM //…

Calais, VT: Z Press. Fine. 1999. Limited Edition. Softcover. A single poem, oblique and confounding, perhaps meant to evoke a vision or dream, rather than a literal interpretation. This is one of John Ashbery's lesser-known individual poems. Ashbery (1927-2017) was poet laureate of New York State, 2001-2003, and the only poet to win The Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award, all for a single book. Tipped in, facing the poem, is a polychrome reproduction of a linocut print by artist Elizabeth Murray. The image is colorful and cartoonish, softening the oblique nature of the poem. Painter and printmaker, Murray (1940-2007) is represented in major institutional collections and was a champion of women artists. Number three in a series of author/artist collaborations designed by Z Press founder and publisher Kenward Elmslie and C. W. Swets. Swets was a printing assistant and companion of Elmslie, and a noted printer and publisher in his own right. This is one of a…

Madison, NJ: Brayers Club. Near Fine. (1947). Limited Edition. Softcover. Tiny nicks to the head edge of the front wrap.; This tiny book contains a facsimile of the holograph manuscript of Wood Flower, a 2-verse poem by Richard Le Gallienne. The narrator finds a flower growing in the woods and wishes to pluck it. Comparing the flower to "The old wild-wood's fairy daughter," the narrator falls under a spell that prevents a hand from taking the flower, so delicate that it might be broken by a touch. Born Richard Thomas Gallienne, the author affected the surname Le Gallienne in early adulthood. A prolific author, his life was tumultuous, encompassing affairs with Oscar Wilde, actor/playwright Wilson Barrett and numerous women, and three wives who dealt with his debt-ridden, alcoholic, womanizing, unstable life. "The frontispiece is printed direct from the silk of a milk-weed seed without any plate or mechanical means of reproduction, on a Washington hand press by Arthur…
