One of the various little booklets printed by The Spiral Press, this copy is a Christmas keepsake with an additional preliminary page, printed thus: "Greetings / Christmas / 1962 / From Robert Frost". This was Frost's short poem about the push and pull of nature, and mystic belief vs. science. "In other words to wager their reliance / On plain religion or religious science." Provenance: From the library and estate of Kenward Elmslie, prolific poet associated with the New York School of poetry, editor, performer, and founder of Z Magazine and Z press. Unpaginated, with 7 pages. The font is unstated, but appears to be the press' unique Emerson and printed on laid, cream colored paper. 5 3/4" x 4 1/2". Bound in laid, cream colored, French flapped wraps printed in brown and gray, saddle stapled with staples bright and holding well. Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. Printer Tommy Tommasini chose fragments that described scenes that the family in this narrative poem would have witnessed. Tiny white spot to front.; This is Ted Joans' (1928-2003) 12-line poem The Truth, which he occasionally titled The Poet in readings. In this book, the composition of the poem's lines differs significantly from Joans' original composition of lines, which he used consistently in readings and printed form. The narrator finds a flower growing in the woods and wishes to pluck it. Comparing the flower to "The old wild-wood's fairy daughter," the narrator falls under a spell that prevents a hand from taking the flower, so delicate that it might be broken by a touch. Born Richard Thomas Gallienne, the author affected the surname Le Gallienne in early adulthood.
