In the original parts. 17 x 11 cm., and 14 x 9 cm (1848-1849). 195 etched plates by Cruikshank, plus five fold-out plates, four in color. Thackeray contributed to the 1839-1840 issues. Contains practically all the first issue points noted by Cohn -- numbered pages of adverts at front and unnumbered at rear, all little slips as called for, Beaufoys toothache ads, proper paper color of wrappers (with scarce first issue green wrapper for 1848), with Bogue's Annual Catalogue for 1847, with "very scarce" 1845 issue containing the "Fine Art Distribution" woodcut on p.32. COHN 184. Marginal toning to some full page plates, light wear to bindings, neat repairs to several backstrips and wrappers. All color fold-out plates bright, crisp and clean.

Front covers and spines of original edition bound-in. As a contributor to Punch Thackeray often parodied the false romantic sentiment pervading the fiction of his day. Thackeray's work is critical of the Victorian bourgeois era, combining an understanding of socio-historical patterns with a vision of life as an unending masquerade. Caldecott died in St. Augustine, Florida in 1886 at the age of forty while on holiday. The entire town mourns the death of the kind and generous Mrs. Blaize. Caldecott made her a pawnshop owner to illustrate her many virtuous deeds. Interior contents clean and bright, covers also sharp and fresh.

This appreciation by Thackeray prompted by his boyhood admiration for Cruikshank who would "forego tarts" to be able to afford a book, or set-up a "joint stock company of boys" to fund a purchase and then draw lots for the prints. FIELD p.101 [JOHN LEETCH ON MY SHELVES] notes the sketches "show an interesting development in his work." Gordon Ray called Leetch, "a Victorian gentlemen at home in good society." Plates clean, and very bright, slight corner and backstrip extremity rubbing. Two armorial bookplates.

Gordon Ray [THE ILLUSTRATOR AND THE BOOK IN ENGLAND FROM 1790 TO 1914] calls this "Doyle's most personal book with respect to life in the world.....The artist Brown, in whom there is a good deal of Doyle himself, records in scores of little scenes the vicissitudes and humors encountered by his companions and himself during a summer's excursion to Germany and northern Italy." Title page lightly toned, interior generally clean, firm copy.

Walter Crane's Picture Books, Large Series: eight eight color plates engraved on wood by Edmund Evans, and printed verso or recto with blank backing. Initial decoratve letters. Originally published anonymously, these pamphlets proved so popular the public demanded to know the artist. Routledge eventually capitulated in 1873 and issued them as Walter Crane's Picture Books. Fresh, very bright copy.
