Berlin: Ernst Wasmuth A.G., 1928. Cloth. Near Fine. The 1928 true 1st edition, with its 120 sumptuous plates, beautifully printed in itaglio. Clean, solid and VG+ in its dark-green cloth, with bright gilt-titling along the front panel and rubbed titling at the spine. A touch of light spotting along the edges, minor foxing at the endsheets and pastedowns, one tiny nick (the size of a pinhead) at the spine. Tall quarto, wonderful, heavily-Art Deco period bookplate ("W. Schwintzer/W. Zehlendorf") at the front pastedown. Selected by Andrew Roth's "Book of 101 Books", among other lists (including Parr) of the most seminal photography books of the 20th century.

New York: Carleton, Publisher, 1864. Full leather. Very Good. Very scarce 1864 photographic study of Central Park, with 50 mounted albumen prints of the Park by W,H. Guild, Jr. and "descriptions and an historical sketch" by Fred B. Perkins. Cleanly ex-libris, each print having been neatly --and inconspicuously-- stamped at its rear by the "Grand Rapids Public Library". Skillfully, professionally rebacked, with about half of the original spine laid back on. Light, forgiveable scuffing as well at the panels, which show minor restoration along the hinges and the edges. Bound in its original, full dark-calf, 5 raised bands, all edges gilt. Thick quarto, 77 numbered pages. Light wear (possible subtle plate removal?) at the front pastedown, still though very presentable and solidly VG. As to the album's scarcity, records show that no copy has come to auction since 1988. A wonderful piece of Americana, specifically of 19th century New York history and photography.

1887. 1/4 leather. Very Good +. A meticulously-crafted album of 29 original, mounted photographs of Yellowstone, all or most of them likely taken in 1887 and purchased directly from the 14-year old National Park. Though the photos are uncredited, we can surmise that photographers such as Thomas Hine, Charles D. Loughrey, Frank Jay Haynes (the official photographer of Yellowstone National Park) or even the renowned William Henry Jackson may have been responsible for some of these photos. All but one of the photos is nicely hand-captioned by a former owner (possibly Joseph D. Potts, whose name adorns the first blank endpaper), the captions serving as crucial identifiers to specific geysers, craters, falls, buildings, etc. The photographs, while all varying slightly in size, are each roughly 8 1/2" wide x 6 1/2" tall. Patterned Cloth. Very Good +. Wonderful handmade photo album, consisting of 144 pages of evocative portraits and autographs gathered between May 1919 and August 1920 by professional German dancers Edith & Gaillard. The album profiles colleagues and friends, creative performers of all kinds, including cabaret artists, opera singers, actors, comedians and dancers. Silver gelatin photographs and postcards, all accompanied by warm inscriptions from the subjects. Created at venues such as the Winer Café in Hirschberg, the Apollo Theater in Augsburg, Stuttgart's Savoy Bar, cafes in Nuremberg, Gelsenkirchen and Spremberg, etc. Signatures include: Paul Godoy, Max Drechsler, Emmy Falke, Richard Müller, Lisa Siemon, "3 Girardi's", Roland Marwitz, Karl Sölter, Harry Brade, Eve Kristen, Rudi Reimers, Magdalena Wetta, Marga von Prostka, Traute van der Kerken, Heinz Artus, Margot Radionoff, Otto Hansen and others. Decorative Cloth. Very Good. Interesting album (7" wide x 5" tall) of 24 hand-colored mounted photographs. Set in late 19th century Japan, bound in decorative brown cloth in a concertina/accordion style. Sepia-toned portraits, enlivened by splashes of red, green and purple. On the front pastedown printed date and name: "April 11, 1887 - With sincere congratulations of Chas. T. Bischof."

Octavo, Introductory essay by the redoubtable Lawrence Durrell. 80 pgs., 61 crisp, beautifully-reproduced black-and-white photos throughout.

Paris: Edition "Arts et Metiers Graphiques", 1933. Spiral bound. Very Good. SIGNED BY BRASSAI near the head of the opening page of Paul Morand's Introduction. A solid, very presentable copy to boot of the 1933 1st edition of this soaring achievement in pre-War photography and printing. Crisp and VG in its iconic card wrappers of a late-evening, cobblestoned Paris walkway, with light creasing and chipping along the edges. A touch of separation as well to the front panel along only the top 1" of the spiral binding. Internally, very sharp, with just a bit of light soiling to several pages of the Introduction. The remarkable gravures, all 62 of them, are all-but-pristine, deep and rich and magnficent. While Brassai's signature is not especially scarce, it is truly uncommon on copies of this, his masterwork and greatest achievement.

Photograph. Near Fine. Wonderful early photograph --circa 1940s-- of a motorcyclist sitting in a provocative pose on his Harley-Davidson. The photo is clean and very sharp, measures 8" x 10" and was taken by professional photojournalist Marshall Hathaway.
