Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons, 1906. Limited to 1,000 copies. An important and influential history of Japan, first published in two folio volumes in 1727-28 and not reprinted in full until this present edition. Kaempfer, a German physician, set out for Japan in May of 1690 in a professional capacity with the Dutch embassy. The ship in which he sailed touched at Siam, whose capital he visited, and in September he arrived at Nagasaki, the only Japanese port then open to foreigners. He remained there for the next two years, during which time he twice visited Tokyo, and engaged himself in an extensive study of Japanese history, geography, customs, and flora. He returned to Java and then Holland in 1693. Huc came to China in 1839, where he labored as a Catholic missionary first in the southern provinces, then at Peking, and then to the north of the capital, just within the borders of Mongolia. In 1844 he was sent to Tibet, but on arriving in Llasa after a long and treacherous journey, he was allowed to remain for only a few weeks. This vivid account of his experiences and adventures, interspersed with observations on eastern manners and customs and the progress of missionary activity in China, enjoyed considerable popularity and was widely reprinted and translated. First Edition. A Scottish botanist, Fortune travelled extensively in Asia, gathering plant specimens for the Royal Horticultural Society and introducing many oriental plants into Britain. He was also engaged by the East India Company to procure tea plants and seeds from the finest tea-districts in China for cultivation in the north-west provinces of India. This account of his third trip to China contains descriptions of Shanghai, Nanking, Foo-chow, the tea districts of Chekiang, &c., and observations on ancient porcelain, the culture of silk, and the late disturbances at Canton.
