Denver, Colorado: William Henry Jackson, 1890. 3 7/8" by 6 1/4" Perhaps a contemporary print: certainly prior to 1897 when Jackson joined the Detroit Publishing Co. and turned his negatives over to the company. At that time the inventory number for "The Old Palace Santa Fe" was changed from 3012 (as on the photo offered here) to 08156, and Detroit Publishing Co. was added at lower right edge. The photo is in very good condition, and is now archivally matted and ready to be framed.. First Edition. Paper. Collectible-Very Good. Illus. by William Henry Jackson. 3 7/8" by 6 1/4". Photo.

Descripción:
Detroit, Michigan: Detroit Publishing Company, 1899. 6 3/4 inches by 9 inches. Famed western American photographer William Henry Jackson spent a great deal of time taking pictures of Native Americans. Late in his career, he formed a relationship with the Detroit Publishing Company and turned over to them thousands of his negatives as well as those of other Western photographers.. Some of those negatives were printed as photochroms, which are color lithographs produced from black and white photographs. The negative from which this photochrom was produced has been attributed to Denver photographer Charles A. Nast by both the National Gallery and the Amon Carter Museum. This photochrom of a Ute family is beautifully colored and is a respectful portrayal of the Native American culture. It is in excellent condition. [Note: Around 1910 the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) in Canada adapted the image into an almost ominous black and white printed postcard, and re-titled it, "A…

New York: Collins and Hannay, 1825. 459 pages + fold-out map of the "western country" and 3 engraved plates (missing is the sketch of the lead mine district). First printing. Octavo. 3/ leather over marbled paper-covered boards. According to Wikipedia, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864) was an American geographer, geologist, and ethnologist, noted for his early studies of Native American cultures, as well as for his 1832 expedition to the source of the Mississippi River. He is also noted for his major six-volume study of Native Americans published in the 1850s. The book offered here is his report on an 1821 expedition from Missouri through Illinois and Indiana into Michigan. There is heavy emphasis on lead mining in Missouri and on treatymaking with the Chippewa and Potawatomi tribes. Howes S196. Quite scarce. The book is in about very good condition: sympathetically rebacked in gilt-ruled tan leather with new brown leather title…

Philadelphia: E. C. Biddle, 1837. Folio (18 3/4 inches by 14 1/4 inches) lithograph from the first folio edition. The print is in excellent condition, with vivid hand-coloring and none of the foxing frequently seen. There is a dime-sized stain in the bottom margin--well away from the image; there is a very narrow line of glue residue along the binding edge--again well away from the image. In 1825 Mahaskah's father (also named Mahaskah) had traveled to Washington, where he negotiated a treaty and had his portrait painted by Charles Bird king. In 1837 "Young" Mahaskah made the same trip because the United States had not lived up to the terms of the treaty. He too had his portrait painted by King, and apparently he was wearing the same bear claw necklace that his father had worn.. First Edition. Paper. Collectible-Very Good. Illus. by Charles Bird King. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Fine Art Print.

Philadelphia: Daniel Rice & James G. Clark, 1844. Folio (18 3/8 inches by 14 1/2 inches) print from the third and final folio edition. The print is in excellent condition, with vivid coloring and none of the foxing frequently seen (see the Smithsonian's copy, for example). There are some smudges in the margins--well away from the image; there is one very small chip out of the bottom right corner in the margin and one 1/2" closed tear on the bottom edge. It is appropriate that McKenney and Hall identified this leader as "The Orator" because the Winnebago called themselves "Hochungra," which translates as "People of the Big Voice." Oratory was highly valued by tribe members, and it was natural that they would send their best orator to speak for them in negotiations in Washington.. Third Edition. Paper. Collectible-Very Good. Illus. by Charles Bird King. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Fine Art Print.

New York: E. & H. T. Anthony & Co., 1871. Original stereoview: albumen prints mounted on printed yellow card stock, with an Anthony advertising label mounted on the patterned green verso of the card. The Yosemite Valley image is one of series that was commissioned by the Anthony brothers who hired photographer T. C. Roche to travel through Yosemite in 1870-1871. Featured in the foreground of the image is Roche's portable dark tent. On the verso is a large Anthony advertising label that lists the "principal places of interest" in Yosemite. The albumen prints are in excellent condition with good contrast, and the yellow mount has only a hint of edgewear; there are two 1-inch long inked lines across the label on the back of the card. From the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the U. S. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70,000 stereoviews from his collection,…

Hollywood, California: E. A. Brininstool, 1933. 36 pages. Limited edition: #382 of 500 copies SIGNED by Brininstool. An important book that was intended to correct the historical record--Benteen was very critical of Custer. This is an ex-library book with perforated stamp on the title page and front cover; the words "autographed copy" written in red pencil on front cover; 3/4" strip along spine on both covers rubbed from tape removal; small paper strip on rear cover that is apparent residue from old checkout slip. BUT the pamphlet is nicer than it sounds and is priced appropriately. Please examine the photos.. SIGNED. First Edition. Paperback. About Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book.

Colorado Springs, Colorado: Byron H. Gurnsey, 1875. Original stereoview: albumen prints mounted on printed card stock. A rare and highly sought-after western stereoview showing a group of Ute males in front of the photographer's studio on Pike's Peak Avenue in Colorado Springs circa 1875. Most of the men are holding weapons; one of them has both a Maynard Carbine (the first one with a folding sight) and a Colt Model 1860 army revolver. This stereoview is from the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the U. S. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70,000 stereoviews from his collection, many of which can be viewed on the library's website. The albumen prints are clean and bright, with very good contrast. The mount is clean, with a hint of edgewear and another previous owner's name written neatly on the back. Also on the back of the mount someone has written the title, "Ute Indians" in pencil.. First…
