London: Companion Book Club, 1969. Companion Book Club edition from 1969, the ''de-luxe'' edition in red shiny covers. Minor creasing to edges of price-clipped dustwrapper, otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. The author's account of her time in Kenya in the mid 1960s working with her husband at a wildlife hospital. London: History Book Club, 1972. History Book Club edition. Some creasing to edges and fading to spine of dustwrapper, some bumping to spine ends and corners of brown boards, otherwise a good tight copy of this hard-cover book. Originally published in 1971, the book deals with the construction of the Uganda Railway between Mombassa and Lake Victoria in the 1890s, and with the political and military machinations by the British in East Africa around that time. A heavy book, packaged weight would be around 1300g, so extra postage will be required from buyers outside the UK. 559pp, b&w illustrations in the text, endpaper maps.. Book Club (BCE/BOMC). London: Hurst & Blackett, 1961. Quite a lot of creasing and tears to unclipped dustwrapper, particularly at spine ends, and with old sellotape at the folds and elsewhere. Minor bumping to spine ends and corners of black boards and some shelf-wear to bottom edge of same, a previous owner's name and date (1963) on f/ep, some yellowing to the pages, but otherwise a not too bad, tight copy of this hard-cover book. Rosemary Howard met her future husband Vincent Uwemedimo, a Nigerian lawyer, when studying teaching in London, and went to live in Nigeria after their marriage. The book deals mostly with their life in Nigeria. She later established Hillside Preparatory School in Calabar in 1971, staying in charge for thirty years before her retirement. She died in 2012. The author's memoirs of his forty years working as a vet in Nakuru, south-eastern Kenya, from 1966 onwards. Originally published in hardback in 2007, this is a later, paperback edition. 384pp.. Some creasing to the corners and to the spine, a few pencil markings in the text and ink notes on last (blank) page, otherwise a good clean tight copy of this soft-cover book. Deals with the activities of the Free Church of Scotland in South Africa from 1900 onwards, and at the Xhosa-speaking Free Church in South Africa, which is located mostly in the Eastern Cape. Signed by the authors on half-title, and a letter from original owners to a later owner pasted in before half-title. 391pp, 16pp (mostly) colour illustrations.. Signed by Author. Paperback. Minor wear to spine ends and corners of green decorated cloth boards, some water-staining to the back, spine has faded from green to a khaki colour, otherwise a good clean tight copy of this lesser-known book by Ballantyne. Not a story, but an account of the author's travels in Cape Colony, South Africa in the 1870s. No publication date given, but Sabbath School prize label inside front board dated 1904. Originally published in 1965, this is a later, paperback edition, part of the publisher's Africasouth series. A play set in a South African reformatory and based on three stories from Paton's collection "Debbie Go Home" ('Sponono', 'Ha'penny' and 'Death of a Totsi'). 190pp.. Paperback. Episodes from the author's parents' time living on the shores of Lake Kariba in (then) north-west Rhodesia between 1968 and 1976. 137pp, colour and b&w drawings throughout.. Paperback. A small scuff to the lower corner of front cover, some yellowing to the pages, but otherwise a good clean tight copy, with no creasing to the spine, of this soft-cover book. This is the first edition, part of the publisher's Africasouth Paperbacks series. The story, set in Cape Town in 1980, involves a White teacher at a Coloured high school who shelters two of her pupils who are engaged in anti-government activity, and tries to understand her own place in the disturbed society of the time.. 190pp.. Unclipped dustwrapper (original price of 12/- on spine) has creasing and tears to edges, particularly a 2.5 inch tear at bottom right of spine and a smaller one-inch tear to opposite side, also a little bit missing at top end and at bottom right of same. Slight bumping to spine ends of gray boards with decoration on front board showing a soldier and a palm tree. A previous (original?) owner's name on f/ep, some yellowing to the pages, a small tear to top corner of map on page 86 (Frontier to Morogoro) where it is fixed to the pages, but with no damage to the printing on the map itself, and no damage to the two smaller maps on pp124 and 172. Otherwise a good clean tight copy of this first edition of this hard-cover book. Deals with the author's wartime service in the German East Africa campaign from 1915-18. Originally published in the UK in 1956 as "Episode" and later in the US as "Episode in the Transvaal", the book was banned in South Africa until August 1982, and here issued in the publisher's Africasouth Paperbacks series.
