Most are from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a few earlier. The text by Bartlett Hayes beautifully complements the nice variety of American artwork presented. The book is in Near-Fine condition. It would be fine except for a tiny crease in the bottom-right corner of the front panel (click on photo). The Near-Fine dust jacket has several tiny tears at the spine crown and a crease in the front interior flap. The rare volume was printed in Japan, with text (which is minimal) in both Japanese and English. It includes an introductory essay by the editor. The pages are unpaginated. The book is flatsigned on the free front endpaper by both the photographer, James Warner, and the author, Donald M. Denlinger. What's remarkable about this book is that the author and photographer have infiltrated the closed society of the Amish in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Amish resent intrusions upon their life from the outside world or even having their pictures taken. It was only after long periods of establishing friendships with these people that this book was able to come into being. It is one of the few honest depictions of Amish life as viewed through text and photographs. New York: Leon Amiel This perennial favorite on Impressionism has been consistently in print since the 1960s, although this particular undated copy is probably of later vintage since it includes the ISBN code. The book would have been in Fine condition except that the bottom corners of the last two pages are torn off, which may have been a manufacturer's defect. The actual illustrations on these last two pages is not affected.
