London: Jarrolds, (1919).. First edition. Blue boards stamped in blind, spine and front cover lettered in black, Fry's Cocoa symbol stamped on rear cover. Small repair to head of spine, paper browned, a clean very good copy in a slightly worn pictorial dust jacket, wear along folds, and splitting along folds internally repaired with clear tape. Quite an attractive copy. Short jokes and tales told at an inn, some told by the ghosts of monks from the ancient monastery upon which the inn is built. At least two bindings exist, as described by George Locke in Spectrum of Fantasy III. This is identical to his variety (a), save for the Fry's Cocoa ad on the back and the front cover decorations being in blind, while in his copy they are in black. It sounds like Locke's binding (b), buff cloth lettered in red & black, is likely the primary binding. Not so common in the dust jacket.

NY & London: Harper, 1907. First edition.. Green cloth, spine and front cover designed and lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece and five inserted plates. Some moderate wear to spine ends, old stain to fore-edge affecting the margins of about half the book, a bright very good copy in general. Seven weird stories. See Clareson: The Emergence of American Science Fiction: 1880-1915, pg. 84. "In these stories Howells well illustrates the culmination of the development of the 'ghost story' toward a form of science fiction ...." BAL 9783. This is the first binding; several others exist.

NY: Riggs, 1902. First edition. Blue pictorial cloth, spine lettered in white, front cover designed in white & gilt. Frontispiece in color, and 7 b&w inserted plates by Peter Newell. Spine a bit faded, some edge wear to spine ends, a very good copy otherwise. The margins of the end papers, the plates, and their adjacent pages are discolored; some old staining along the fore-edge of the back cover. Still, a decent looking copy. Twelve adventures of Jimmieboy, one of which is a trip to Saturn. Bleiler: Science-Fiction: The Early Years: 116. BAL 757.

cat40a. NY: Knopf, 1934. First American edition. Black cloth designed and lettered in gilt. Borzoi patterned end papers. Illustrated title page printed in black & red. A little marking to upper page edges, but a fine copy in a slightly worn pictorial dust jacket, some scuffing to edges and folds, and a crease partway along the spine. This book is seen in three different dust jackets; this is the variety made of gold-foil type paper, designed and lettered in black & red, with the pyramid design on the front. Adventure in Bolivia; a boy is educated by a mysterious priest, and sets out to unite the oppressed races in his country. Of marginal lost-race interest; Stuart Teitler saw fit to include a copy in his collection. The British edition appeared in 1933.

NY: Poseidon, (1988). First edition. . Light green boards, blue cloth spine lettered in gilt. A fine copy in dust jacket, some light soiling to back of jacket. Small ink stamp (remainder?) on lower page edges. The author's first book.

cat40a. London: Avernus, (1991). First edition. Blue cloth, unlettered. A fine copy in a lightly worn dust jacket, some rubbing to corners and edges. Limited to 100 copies, signed by Aldiss on the front fly leaf.

cat40a. St. Louis: Little & Becker, 1884. First edition. Green cloth, covers stamped in blind, spine ruled & lettered in gilt. Floral end papers. A bright, fine copy, unusual in such nice condition. A couple of small pencil notes within, indicate the authorship of a particular poem or chapter. Inscribed from C.F. Newcomb on the first blank leaf, dated 1892. Very biblical and proverbial in tone, this novel advances the idea that the Mound Builders were descended from tribes which were originally from Egypt and Assyria, and that they built great cities in North America around 2000 B.C. A copy in the Huntington Library bears an inscription which suggests that the author was J.M. Hanks; it is likely that Cyrus F. Newcomb was the publisher. Clareson: Science Fiction in America: 1870s-1930s: 593. Wright III: 598.

cat40a. NY: St. Martins, (1986). First American edition. Black boards, spine lettered in gilt. A small remainder stamp, the letter "W", on lower page edges, faint edge wear; otherwise fine in a lightly used dust jacket, some light scuffing to spine ends. The British edition appeared from Macmillan in the same year.

cat40a. London: F.V. White, 1897. First edition. Burgundy cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, publisher's device in blind on rear cover. Frontispiece & 5 inserted plates. Ads at rear dated January 1897, comprising pages 297-304. Shelf wear to lower edge, ownership signature in front, inner hinges cracking somewhat, some foxing to title and a few other leaves; a bright, very good copy in general. A future war novel forecasting the Boer war. Locke: Spectrum of Fantasy: page 97 (describing the second edition). Suvin: Victorian Science Fiction in the UK: page 67.

A tear at the spine into the margins, some modest wear to edges, a very good copy. Clark Ashton Smith contributes a 1-page verse: Autumn Orchards.

cat40a. Marseille, France: "Studies" Publications, (1928). First edition. Brown cloth, spine and front cover lettered in dark brown. Wear to tips, inner hinges glued, a bit of soiling to front cover, a very good copy. Fantastic tale, dealing with a lost race in a city in Africa. Not common.

Some dust soiling, some stains to the edge of the back cover, repair to inner front hinge, small piece chipped from the front fly leaf; a very good copy otherwise. Exotic adventure tale of a lost tribe of Hindus on a remote island. Supernaturalism, hypnosis, and a necklace of accursed rubies.

Frontispiece & 54 illustrations. Some rubbing of cloth and a bit of wear to corners, a bright very good copy. The first edition was published by Tower in 1892. Naval war in the future between England and France.

Ownership sticker on inner front cover, glue repair to inner front hinge, some wear to tips and spine extremities, a bright very good copy in general. Wright III: 2050. An owner's note in the front suggests that this novel concerns witchcraft, but a quick scan does not reveal any such content - it looks to be primarily a novel of historical adventure.

Shelf wear to edges, cloth repair to split along front hinge and tear across spine, inner front hinge repaired; generally a very good copy, internally fresh. Copies exist in other colors of cloth, including blue and purple. A collection of short pieces, many of them fantasy and science-fiction. Bleiler: Science-Fiction: The Early Years: 1862. Rebound in plain brown paper wrappers, with the front panel of the original binding pasted on, the spine lettered by hand. Issued as a volume in the Beacon Series, July 20, 1898. An uncommon issue. Lost race - a 16th century English culture survives in the Antarctic. First published in 1894. The original edition has two maps and six plates.

Frontispiece and seven inserted plates by Harold Piffard. Wear to hinges (fraying along rear hinge - partly worn through) and corners, inner hinges cracking, some soiling of cloth, generally very good otherwise. Gift label on front end paper. Rear fly leaf detached but present. The book was first issued by Tower in 1896; the title page was replaced by Thacker when they reissued the book in 1898. A lost-race novel set in Africa, of a pre-Phoenician civilization.

London: Hutchinson, [c. 1930]. Fourth Edition.. Red cloth, designed and lettered in gilt. Spine a bit dull, leaned, a very good copy. Issued as a volume in Hutchinson's Adventure-Story Library (so indicated by the ad leaf at the front). First published in 1922. Lost-race adventure set in Asia, of a civilization descended from the Lemurians, in a city commanded by a beautiful white queen, defended by legions of giant apes.
